Find the Right Crew for your Yacht

YACHT CREW ROLES

Core Leadership Roles

  • Captain
The vessel's senior officer and final authority on board. Responsible for overall safety, navigation, crew management, regulatory compliance, and the owner's/guests' experience. Oversees all departments and makes final decisions in any operational or emergency situation.
  • First Officer / Chief Officer
Second-in-command, reporting directly to the Captain. Manages deck operations, crew scheduling, safety drills, and often takes the watch when the Captain is off duty. Acts as the Captain's right hand and typically steps in to run the vessel if the Captain is unavailable.
  • Chief Engineer
Head of the engineering department, responsible for all mechanical, electrical, and technical systems — engines, generators, HVAC, plumbing, and more. Ensures the vessel is mechanically sound and compliant with maintenance and safety regulations.
  • Chief Stewardess / Chief Steward
Leads the interior department, overseeing guest service, housekeeping, provisioning, and interior standards. Manages the stew team and ensures the owner/guest experience meets a five-star standard.
  • Chef / Head Chef
Runs the galley — menu planning, provisioning, and food service for crew, owners, and guests, often tailoring meals to specific dietary needs and preferences.
  • Bosun
A senior deckhand role bridging deck crew and leadership. Manages day-to-day deck maintenance, tenders/water toys, and supervises junior deckhands, reporting to the First Officer.

Interior Crew Roles

  • Second Stewardess / Steward
Second-in-command of interior. Supports the Chief Stew with service, housekeeping, laundry, and often takes on specialized duties like bar service, silver service, or guest itinerary coordination.
  • Third/Junior Stewardess / Steward
Entry-to-mid level interior crew. Handles cabin cleaning, laundry, table service, and general guest care under the direction of senior stews.
  • Stewardess / Steward (general)
Broad role covering cleaning, laundry, table setting/service, cabin turnovers, and provisioning support — duties scale with experience level and vessel size.
  • Purser (larger yachts)
Handles administrative and financial side of interior/guest operations — budgets, accounts, guest documentation, travel arrangements, and sometimes HR duties for the crew.
  • Spa Therapist / Masseuse (larger/luxury yachts)
Provides spa treatments, massages, and wellness services for guests on yachts with dedicated spa facilities.
  • Nanny / Nurse (charter or family-specific)
Occasionally brought on for family charters with young children, or for medical needs — not a standard permanent role but common on larger private yachts.

Exterior Crew Roles

  • Second Officer
Supports the Chief Officer with navigation watches, safety equipment checks, and deck crew supervision. Common on larger yachts with a more structured deck hierarchy.
  • Lead Deckhand
Experienced deckhand who takes on informal leadership of day-to-day tasks, often filling in for the Bosun's responsibilities on smaller yachts without a dedicated Bosun position.
  • Deckhand
Entry-to-mid level exterior crew. Handles exterior cleaning, maintenance (washdowns, varnishing, polishing), line handling during docking/anchoring, tender operation, and water sports/toy setup for guests.
  • Watersports / Dive Instructor (larger or activity-focused yachts)
Specializes in guest water activities — jet skis, diving, wakeboarding, paddleboarding — including safety briefings, equipment maintenance, and instruction.
  • Engineer
While typically a separate department under the Chief Engineer, engineers work closely with deck crew on tender/toy mechanical upkeep and are sometimes cross-trained on deck duties on smaller yachts.

Depending on What your Program Requires

Other Crew Roles We Fill

Freelance / Day Worker
Crew hired on a short-term, as-needed basis — often just for a day, a delivery, or to cover a specific gap (illness, quick turnaround before charter, etc.). Common in busy ports like Antibes, Palma, or Fort Lauderdale where crew are on standby for last-minute calls. Paid daily rates rather than salaried.

Rotational Crew
Crew who work fixed periods on, then off (e.g., 2 months on / 1 month off), common on larger yachts or those in year-round charter/private use. Not exactly seasonal, but a defined cyclical schedule rather than year-round continuous employment.

Seasonal Crew
Hired for a specific charter season (e.g., Caribbean winter season or Mediterranean summer season) and released or moved on once it ends. Common on charter yachts where demand is concentrated in a few months of the year.

Delivery Crew
Freelancers brought on specifically to help move a yacht from one location to another (e.g., crossing the Atlantic for the season change) — typically experienced deck/engineering crew hired just for that transit.

Relief Crew
Temporary crew brought in to cover for permanent crew on leave, vacation, or medical absence — can be for a few days or several weeks depending on the need.

A few things that make this category distinct from permanent crew hiring:

  • Contracts are short-term or per-job rather than ongoing employment
  • Pay is usually daily/flat-rate rather than salaried
  • Crew often work multiple yachts across a season rather than one vessel
  • Availability and quick placement matter more than long-term fit
